My treadmill keeps tripping the electric in my garage. It used to work fine?

Whenever i used my treadmill, it trips the electric and shuts down. It only runs for a few seconds then clicks off. I’m using a surgeprotector and my wiring is fairly new. It used to wrok fine, but not now. What can I do about it? I really don’t want to pay an electrician to come in. Thanks

Have you added something else to that circuit? Your treadmill could be drawing more current than it used to. Try cleaning and lubricating it to see if that helps, although I suspect you are drawing extra current from a new appliance somewhere – did you just get a freezer in the garage or something like that?

Why the surge protecter? Is it plugged into a GFI, if so, move it to a regular outlet

you don’t need a surge protector. those are designed for expensive, fragile electronics. plug the treadmill directly into the wall. the wiring in the surge protector could be undersized for the amperage you are drawing. try plugging it straight into the wall and see what happens.

Your problem is the outlet for one, and the garage second.

    1. GFCI(common in garages) outlets are designed to trip when grounded. Since treadmills disipate a lot of electricity, they frequently trip CFCI outlets. So you should plug it into an outlet inside your house, not in the garage, bathroom or kitchen and sometimes Basements. Keep the surge suppressor though, treadmills have fragile electronics.

    2. It’s your choice if you want to store your treadmill in the garage, but the dust will most likely kill it. Dust is a treadmill killer and I advise all my customers not to store their treadmills in their garage or unfinished basement. Some do, they have no other place to put it, but they accept the damage and plan to buy a new treadmill every year or two.
